Rock Beats Nose

There are those moments in life, where you know something monumental has happened -- something that will stick with you forever. And when you’re dying, it will be one of the images that flash through your mind.

Today, I added a new life moment to my collection.

NOTE TO DAVID: Auntie Jill has already promised to drunkenly re-tell this story to your first serious girlfriend. You are welcome.

Give me a moment to get warmed up here. I need to give you some background before I get to the good stuff.

I arrived at my meeting at 11:45AM. I got a call from Dave at 11:46AM explaining that David’s school was trying to reach us, because David had lodged a rock up his nose. I walked into my meeting, told them I would not be attending and drove back to the other side of town to pick up David.

I called David’s doctor and asked what their recommended course of action is. They recommended an urgent care facility. Our awesome friend, Kat, found a place, texted the address and we were on our way.

It was my first time in an urgent care facility. They’re not bad. Not great, but not bad. And the service is fast. Way faster than my doctor’s office. Anyway, they took us back, took David’s weight and height and showed us to our room.

The doctor promptly came in and was able to see the rock (which was no longer easy to see). He stepped out to grab some medical nose picker thing and when he came back, he could no longer see the rock.

Now, this is where it gets interesting.

The doctor looks at me and says, “Well, the next best course of action is for you *pause*, Mom, to plug up the nostril without the rock, cover his open mouth with your open mouth and forcibly breath into him. Sometimes that will dislodge the object.”

Um, I’m a germ-a-phobe. Even with my kids’ germs. I don’t care if you judge me for that, I’m just telling you how it is.

I am also a mom and I knew this was going to be one of those things I just had to suck it up and do. So I did.

I plugged David’s left nostril, covered his open mouth with my mouth and breathed into him. Immediately, the slime-covered rock shot out of his nose and landed on my arm. It was bigger than expected. The rust-colored rock was long and flat. Kind of like an arrowhead.

I did not realize that a rock could induce gagging. David cheered “Yay!” The doctor and nurse laughed.

I had to pay $35 to blow that rock out of my Son’s nose myself.

Impromptu Shoot

Last night we met our friends Rob and Noelle for dinner. After dinner we showed Noelle our local patch of bluebonnets and she captured this photo of V. So sweet. Look at those eyes...

Thank you, Noelle!

Family Tradition 2012

2011 photos.
2010 photos.
2009 photos.
2008 photos.

This year I had the idea to take bluebonnet photos at sunset - that way you get the lights from downtown Houston in the photo. FREE TIP: The mosquitos were terrible, but I liked the light. 15 minutes earlier would have been perfect light.

The Flight Home

The San Jose Sharks

It's a long, only semi-interesting story as to how. Just know that I spent this evening in the owner's box at the Shark's game. It was fun.
